The Ruth Z. Korman Pelech School for Girls
The Ruth Z. Korman Pelech School for Girls

The Ruth Z. Korman Pelech Girls School in Kiryat Ekron was founded in 2000 by a group of concerned parents from Rehovot, Israel. The school offers a halachically-based education modeled after that of the highly successful Pelech school in Jerusalem. The Pelech system is based on a unique combination of educational principles, implemented via a distinctive set of teaching methods, including creative integration of disciplines, the use of alternative assessment, and individual mentoring of students. Expression in non-traditional creative channels is encouraged, while academic excellence and personal creativity is promoted. The students learn Jewish texts, including Talmud, at a high level, and pursue a broad range of subjects as varied as archeology and drama. The school fosters a spirit of community responsibility, community service and respect for others in its students.

The school has a heterogeneous student population, numbering, in 2005-6, 300 students in grades 7-12. It includes native Israelis, as well as immigrants from Ethiopia, America, and elsewhere. Students are eventually expected to number approximately 330 girls in grades 7-12.

The school serves surrounding communities, including Rehovot, Rishon Lezion, Hashmonaim, Modiin and Beit Shemesh, from the Israel coastal plain.

The school aims to instill a love of Torah, a love of Israel, as well as a halachic commitment to Torah and its commandments, a modern Orthodox identity and a vibrant Zionism. It encourages intellectual curiosity and an appreciation of the humanities, the sciences and the arts, with an understanding of their influence on the development of Jewish and general thought.

It serves to cultivate female self-awareness and confront the ongoing changes in the role of the Jewish woman in society, using and adhering to halachic sources.

It offers disadvantaged religious girls of the coastal plain an educational opportunity, facilitated by an extensive scholarship program.

The challenging scholastic environment encourages independent and creative critical thinking, in an environment that provides the opportunity for each student to develop her own talents and achieve personal excellence.
